About HostCheck
What is HostCheck?
HostCheck.co.uk is a free online tool that allows web developers, system administrators, and hosting professionals to preview how a website looks on a specific server — without changing DNS records or editing host files. It is designed for anyone who needs to verify that a website works correctly on a new server before making DNS changes that would affect live visitors.
Whether you're migrating to a new hosting provider, launching a redesigned site, or troubleshooting a server issue, HostCheck lets you verify everything works perfectly before going live. Our tool is used by freelance developers, digital agencies, IT departments, and hosting companies across the United Kingdom and around the world.
How It Works
HostCheck operates as a reverse proxy. When you enter a domain name and server IP address, we
generate a unique preview link. When you open that link, our server fetches the website content from
the specified IP while sending the correct Host header — making the target server
respond as if your domain was already pointed to it.
This means you can browse the full website, navigate between pages, view images, and test functionality — all without any DNS changes. The preview link is a regular URL that can be opened in any browser on any device, including mobile phones and tablets.
The entire process takes just a few seconds. There is no software to install, no browser extension to add, and no account to create. Simply enter the two pieces of information — your domain and the target server IP — and click the preview button. HostCheck handles the rest.
The Problem We Solve
Server migrations are a routine part of managing websites. Businesses change hosting providers for better performance, lower costs, improved support, or new features. Developers build new versions of websites on staging servers before launching them. Agencies manage dozens of client sites across multiple hosting environments.
In all of these scenarios, there is a critical question that needs answering before any DNS change is made: does the website work correctly on the new server?
Traditionally, the only way to answer this question was to edit your computer's hosts file — a process that requires administrator privileges, only works on a single device, and must be manually reversed afterwards. It cannot be shared with clients or colleagues, it does not work on mobile devices, and it is easy to forget to undo, leading to confusion when the old server is eventually decommissioned.
HostCheck eliminates all of these pain points with a simple, browser-based approach that anyone can use.
Why We Built This
We built HostCheck because previewing websites on a new server has historically been a frustrating process. Our team has spent years working in web hosting, server administration, and web development. We have personally experienced the frustration of managing server migrations — the anxiety of switching DNS without being completely sure the new server is ready, the late-night troubleshooting when something goes wrong after the switch, and the difficulty of showing clients a preview of their migrated site.
We looked at the existing tools available and found them lacking. Some required paid subscriptions. Others were overly complex, designed for enterprise environments rather than everyday web professionals. Many required account registration and provided far more functionality than was needed for a simple preview. We wanted something that was instant, free, and dead simple.
HostCheck is different. It's instant, free, and requires absolutely no setup. Just enter your domain, enter the server IP, and click preview. That simplicity is deliberate — we believe the best tools are the ones that get out of your way and let you focus on your actual work.
Owner and Creator
HostCheck was created by Mark Bolton. The site is run as an independent practical resource for developers, agencies, and business owners who need to verify server moves before making live DNS changes.
Mark oversees the direction of the tool, reviews the quality of the published guides, and handles direct business and owner enquiries. You can reach him at mark@hostcehck.co.uk or read more on the dedicated owner page.
Our Mission
Our mission is simple: make website previewing as easy as possible. We believe that developers and agencies should be able to verify server migrations and hosting changes in seconds, not minutes or hours. We believe that every server migration should be tested before DNS is changed, and that the tools to do this testing should be freely available to everyone.
We are committed to keeping the core HostCheck preview tool free forever. No paywalls, no feature gating, no "freemium" limitations. The tool you see today is the tool you will always have access to.

The Technology Behind HostCheck
At its core, HostCheck is a carefully engineered reverse proxy. When you generate a preview link, the URL contains an encoded token that specifies the target domain and server IP address. When the link is opened, our server:
- Decodes the token to extract the domain name and target IP address
- Sends an HTTP request to the target IP with the domain set in the Host header
- Receives the response from the target server
- Rewrites internal URLs so that links and resources continue to work through the proxy
- Returns the modified response to your browser
This approach ensures that virtual hosting works correctly — the target server sees the right domain in the Host header and responds with the correct website, even if it hosts multiple domains on the same IP address.
Our Commitment to Privacy
We take privacy seriously. HostCheck does not require you to create an account, provide an email address, or share any personal information. The domain names and server IP addresses you enter are used solely to generate your preview link and are not stored on our servers after the session ends. We do not track which websites you preview, and we do not build profiles of our users.
For more details about how we handle data, please read our Privacy Policy.
Educational Resources
Beyond the preview tool itself, we are committed to helping web professionals succeed. Our blog features in-depth guides on DNS, server migrations, web hosting, SSL certificates, website security, and other topics that are directly relevant to the people who use HostCheck. Every article is written from real-world experience and designed to provide actionable advice rather than generic overviews.
Editorial Standards
We publish content for practitioners, not for page views alone. Our guides are reviewed for technical accuracy, updated when workflows change, and corrected when readers highlight issues. You can read our full Editorial Policy for details on authorship, review standards, corrections, and how advertising is kept separate from editorial decisions.
